Welcome to Crewe Congregational Tennis Club

Situated in picturesque surroundings in Crewe, Cheshire, we are a friendly, social and competitive tennis club offering a range of membership options at great prices!

Club History

Crewe Congregational Tennis Club lies tucked away in a quiet spot between Gainsborough Rd. and Ruskin High School in Crewe. It has been there for over 90 years and was originally started in 1922 by four enterprising members of the Congregational Church which stood on Hightown in Crewe (hence the Club's official name – 'Crewe Congregational Tennis Club'). At first the club used courts belonging to Union St. Baptist Church but in 1926 the present site was acquired and the members laid down 2 grass tennis courts and a croquet lawn! A few years later a Pavilion was erected and the croquet lawn was converted into a 3rd court.

During the 2nd World War the third court was dug up and the land was used for growing vegetables as part of the war effort. After the war the members set-to again and converted the two remaining grass courts into red-shale using ash obtained from Crewe Works tip. In 1947 the Club was one of the founder members of the Nantwich and District Tennis League, the fore-runner of today's Slazenger South and Mid-Cheshire Tennis League.

In 2002 the Club replaced the shale courts with a porous tarmac all-weather surface which were officially opened by Jo Hulse one of the Club's Trustees on Saturday 24th May 2003. The club could then be open all year round and teams were entered into the Winter League as well as the Summer League. The Pavilion was re-clad in 2006 and a car park created in 2009. The courts were re-surfaced in September 2015. The grounds and courts are partly maintained by volunteers from it's membership.
